OT Driving Assessments in Sydney

Occupational Therapy (OT) Driving Assessments in Sydney, to ensure your safety on the roads.

Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment

We offer Occupational Therapy (OT) Driving Assessment services to all regions of Metro Sydney.

We have experience working with individuals, rehabilitation and insurance providers and are also a registered NDIS service provider.

Driving is an integral part of our lives, providing control and independence. Driving is a complex and highly demanding task that requires good physical capacity, vision and strong cognitive skills.

Our Sydney OT Driving Assessment service evaluates if clients’ are medically fit to drive. This service is conducted by qualified Occupational Therapists who provide recommendations and referral pathways to ensure safety on the roads. The OT Driver Assessment is the gold standard in assessing a person’s ability to drive.

Transport NSW may require an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment be conducted for clients presenting with certain medical conditions. Your doctor will advise if an OT Driving Assessment is necessary.

The OT Driving Assessment requires completion of two components:

This component looks at your medical background, driving history, vision, physical ability, decision-making and judgement skills relevant to driving and road law knowledge. An off-road assessment takes approximately 2 hours.

The On-Road component is a practical test that assesses your fitness to drive on Sydney’s road. It is completed with a qualified driving instructor and the Occupational Therapist in an instructor's dual controlled car. This test can take 1 to 2 hours, depending on your needs.

 Possible Outcomes

Following the off-road and on-road assessment, the assessor will provide feedback on performance.

The outcomes can include:

  • The driver is fit to drive with no further interventions required

  • The driver is fit to drive with certain restrictions such as only a limited distance from their home, driving in daylight hours only or driving an automatic vehicle only

  • The driver should complete a series of driving lessons with a qualified driving instructor, and a referral will be provided

  • Driving lessons should be completed to gain competency in driving with specialised vehicle modifications.

  • The driver is unfit to drive, and their licence will be cancelled or suspended.

Following assessment, our OT will write up a comprehensive report, sent to you, your treating Doctor (if required) and to Transport NSW.

 Cost: $650

This is inclusive of both the off-road and on-road assessment in Sydney as well as reporting. The driving instructor and any lessons are additional.

If you are an NDIS or Home Care Package participant, this may be covered by your plan if the budget allows. You may also be eligible for a rebate from your private health insurer or covered by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs - Please contact them directly to find out more.
